Practically Overcoming People Bondage | Christian Girl Talk

Friday, October 13, 2017

Hey guys!

You doing good? I have had such a hectic week at work, can't even begin to describe! But hey, I am making it through with a good attitude!! Woop! As promised, here is how I overcame and still continue to overcome people bondage on a daily basis!

Firstly, before we go into the practical steps, I think it's important to have a solid foundation to stand on and understand why it's very unhealthy to have such an extreme concern for what people think about you and allowing it to influence your decisions.

Read the following verses below and think about them :

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."  Hebrews 13:8

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. " Isaiah 55: 8-9

"Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant." Galatians 1:10

Practical Steps

  • Constantly remind yourself that every decision has it's own consequences whether good or bad and as it is your life, you will be the one to live with the consequence, not the people around you.
  • People's opinions and thoughts about others are EXTREMELY fleeting, but when I say EXTREMELY, I mean EXTREMELY! Major events will be the main topic for 2 weeks max (this can even sometimes include death), then something new comes along . Making a life changing decision or any decision for that matter based on your fear of being the 'hot topic' for 2 weeks max is very irresponsible.
  • God has a different plan for every individual, which means our paths may look very different through the decisions He guides us to make. Remember that you are an Individual in Christ, He called YOU and chose YOU, He sees you as YOU, not as 'so and so', therefore what He has purposed for you is what must materialise. You cannot live someone else's life.
  • Hebrews 13:8, the same God who asked the 'outrageous' from our heroes of faith in the past, see Hebrews 11, is the same God today, He has never ever changed and never will. So don't be surprised when He requests the same from you. Don't ask for the opinion of others because - Isaiah 55:8-9, if those in the past i.e. Abraham, had done that, there would not be a story to tell today.
  • Face that fear!! When you feel awkward because of a decision you have taken, when people are speaking about you and change towards you....hold your head high and don't change. Be yourself, face those stares, the whispers when you walk past, the awkward conversations. Just because they change, doesn't mean you have to!!
*Side story, the week I made my decision (refer to my last post), I attended a meeting in which it was very clear to all present I no longer had the title. Did I not want to go to church in those moments? a BIG Yes! Did I want to avoid people? Yes!! Did I feel awkward in places and moments where I had never felt awkward? Oh Yes!!! But did I give in to my emotions? Heck No! Why? Because I am stronger than my fleeting feelings! I rose above the way I felt and you can too!

  • Last but not least, think about what is on the other side of your obedience, of that dream you have inside of you that never dies, that amazing idea. Think about all the people who will benefit and be helped not just as a consequence of your decision, but also those who will gain the confidence to step out in obedience because of your example.
I hope this helped you in some way, shape or form.
